Because you give this document importance and authority it never had nor
has today is irrelevant and your problem.

How did Lincoln's introduction to the Gettysburg Address change that
document's authority, O history student?

What "authority" does the Gettysburg address have in the first
place? I doubt you could have a court decision overruled
on the grounds that it was ungettysburgian.

The Declaration of Independence is a historical document that was
written before the 13 colonies became the United States. The DOI is not
a legal document like the Constitution. The First amendment is the most
important one in the constitution and referred to this amdnedment as the
Establishment Clause.

Also, check the Treaty of Tripoli in 1797. President John Adams and the
Senate unanimously approved it. It states the US is not a Christian nation.

Even conservatives think churches should stay out of politics. See
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/21/study-conservatives-grow_n_120520.html

If a church is willing to pay taxes, it can engage in politics. This is
the real issue. Some right wing churches want to espouse political
beliefs form the pulpit and still maintain their tax free status.

Most Americans prefer to keep church and state separate.

True. It was a statement of justification to dissolve
the bonds of one government for enumerated
reasons.....covering most of the document

The preamble gives some indication of the philosophical
reasons.

All of the amendments addressed the various issues not
specifically addressed in the body of the constitution.
All have purposes, importance notwithstanding.

Seems rather silly (at the time, or for the time) to
consider any other religion given the historical
background of who came here and why. Any reference to
a god, or "higher power" would normally been referenced
to what was there.

Sure weren't shiploads of Jews, Buddhists, or Mayans
landing here for a century prior.
